Article Text*:	Officially named as Swami Vivekananda Bridge, Ellis Bridge is an old heritage bridge situated in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. It was the first bridge of Ahmedabad constructed in 1892. It connects the western and eastern parts of the city beyond the Sabarmati River. structural engineering services Initially, in 1869, Ellis Bridge was a wooden bridge built by the British Engineers at an estimate of Rs 549,000; which was later collapsed by floods in 1875. The bridge was rebuilt with steel shipped from Birmingham by Himmatlal Dhirajram Bhachech at an estimate of Rs 407,000 lower than the budget; named after Sir Barrow Helbert Ellis, a North zone commissioner. The Government grew suspicious about the materials used in the bridge by Himmatlal were of low quality. Thus, an inquiry committee was set up for the same and found out that Himmatlal has saved the government money of budget Rs 500,000 using the superior quality materials; for that he was tribute with caption of Rao Sahib. It was heard by thousands that Mahatma Gandhi was declaring his Dandi march on 8 March 1930 from Ellis Bridge. Many Proposals were made to pull down the bridge in 1973, 1983 and 1986 but all were rejected. Later Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) announced Ellis Bridge and its boundary, Manek Burj and the natural water drain near one of the banks of Sabarmati River as protected sites in May, 1989. Initially, steel bridge was narrow and not suited for heavy motorized traffic so it was closed in 1997. A new concrete bridge was constructed on either side of the steel bridge to support heavy traffic in 1999 at an estimate of Rs 180 million, while the original steel bridge is preserved as a heritage landmark. After the documentation, the Manek Burj was partially removed and Ganesh Bari, the Maratha gate, was constructed to make space for the bridge. The bridge has been renamed as 'Swami Vivekananda Bridge'.
