Article Text*:Metro Express for Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad (MEGA) is a suggested local subway rail system for the cities of Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad, India. It is owned 50% by Indian and 50% by Gujarat Government. It is a rapid transit type of public transport. Manjula Subramaniam is the chief executive of MEGA. There are 2 numbers of lines and 32 numbers of stations in Phase 1. It is projected that about 2 million riders will travel daily by 2020 and about 4.5 million riders will travel daily by 2041. The operation will start from October 2018.
In 2003, the study for urban transport was carried out by Gujarat Infrastructure Development between Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad. Also carried out the detailed project report through Delhi Metro Rail Corporation and RITES, Mechanical Drafting submitted it in June 2005 and received the approval of Central Government in the same year. On 4th February 2010, Gujarat Government integrated the Metro-link express for Gandhinagar & Ahmedabad (MEGA) Company ltd. to execute the Metro Rail Project under the Companies Act, 1956.
The project has a vision of providing safe, rapid and ecological transport service in reasonable rates to the public concurrently causing urban growth and decreasing the overcrowding on the roads. The project will propagandize with AMTS, BRTS, Railways and other public transportation services.
Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Metro Rail Project not only plans to develop the Gujarat state but the entire nation. The project brings the following benefits:
